Whenever a hunter’s moon hangs on the horizon, filling the hours of dark with enough light for trees to cast shadows, and when there’s a crispness to the morning air which hints of coming frosts, my mind invariably turns to upland game hunting. That’s no doubt in part because this type of hunting—for squirrels, rabbits, quail, and grouse, with the occasional woodcock thrown in for good measure—was an important and integral part of my boyhood.
It also just happens to be a subject area where I think some of America’s finest writing on the outdoors has focused. I merely need mention names such as Robert Ruark, Havilah Babcock, Nash Buckingham, Burton Spiller, Horatio Bigelow, and Gene Hill to offer support for that contention. Add more recent writers such as David Henderson, Mike McIntosh, and George Bird Evans, and I rest my case.
Recently I acquired a small but quite nice collection of books devoted to upland game, and that holding, together with a fairly wide assortment of books in the field I had on hand but had not listed, led to the offerings you see here. I also undertook what I need to do in a much more concerted way; namely, some serious shelf cleaning and organizing in my personal library. It’s little short of amazing how many duplicates line my shelves (many of them different editions, to be sure), and there is some “space freeing” involved in these lists as well.
At any rate, here are three lists—two offering quite full listings of books by or about Nash Buckingham and George Bird Evans, and a third covering upland game in general—for your perusal. I hope you’ll find an item or three to take you, at least mentally, to the coverts and covers of autumn.
